-COMPETITIONS:
There's all sorts
of beer competitions. Some organised by trade bodies, some by
pressure groups such as CAMRA and some by commercial concerns
like supermarkets. They all have the aim of selecting a 'best
beer' that conforms to their own 'style' guidelines. These guidelines
might cover alcohol content, bitterness, taste and sometimes
a lot more. You could say that taste is all subjective but brewing
to a set of style guidelines is quite exacting and objectively
measurable. Some tasting are 'blind' and some are open. The best
are those that are 'blind' where the tasting judges are not given
the brewery name. A truism about blind tasting is that 'a glance
at the label is worth a hundred years of experience'.
