What a fantastic day for Ol and Tim, who recently visited Simpsons Malt in Berwick to learn more about one of our favourite ingredients – Golden Promise.
Their trip took them to Bee Edge Farm in Eyemouth, where this iconic barley variety continues to be grown. Golden Promise has been cultivated in UK soil since the 1960's and, while it's one of the most complex malts in brewing, it's also one of the most challenging to grow.
We use Golden Promise in six of our beers, including Yankee, Baby-Faced Assassin and Yorkshire's Best, so it was invaluable to hear first-hand about the dedication, expertise and care that goes into producing it. From the unique growing techniques to the challenges farmers face each season, the visit reinforced why continuing to champion this incredible malt is so important to us – and to the wider brewing community.
A huge thank you to Richard, Jamie, Martin and David at Simpsons Malt for showing us around, introducing us to the brilliant local farmers they work with, and giving us the opportunity to see everything from the trial plots in the field through to the drying, steeping and kilning process that transforms barley into the exceptional malt we brew with.
It's always inspiring to see the passion and craftsmanship behind the ingredients that make their way into every pint.
